No one can take the fun out of the Fort
Old Fort Bay is located in the northwestern pocket of New Providence and east of Lyford Cay. Together, these two private and gated communities make the island's as well as The Bahamas' most sought-after places to live. The site of Old Fort Bay was once a British colonial fortress that was established in the 18th century when pirates sailed around the Caribbean in search of treasures. At the heart of the community is the fort itself which has been restored to its full glory and transformed into Old Fort Bay's historic clubhouse.
Romantic origins
Old Fort Bay, for a brief period of time in the 19th century, became a plantation until its ownership passed on to the Brady family with the patriarch James Cox Brady, Jr. at the helm. Upon his death, the property was turned into a museum and gallery of sorts by Charles Suydam Cutting, a British explorer and naturalist, who married Cox Brady, Jr.'s widow. Old Fort Bay seemingly vanished from the local imagination and conversation when it laid abandoned for most of the 20th century. In 2002, however, Old Fort Bay's revival as a private gated community began with Joe Lewis from the Tavistock Group leading the project. It was later opened in 2003 and joined Lyford Cay as the most prestigious communities in The Bahamas.
